Partner Les Klinger, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Sherlock Holmes, and long-time friend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar teamed up for a one-on-one public conversation discussing Kareem’s new book Mycroft Holmes. The well-attended event was held at Chevalier’s Bookstore, which, established in 1940, is one of the oldest bookstores in Los Angeles.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is recognized by Sports Illustrated and Time magazine as history’s greatest basketball player (he is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer) and has been an avid Sherlock Holmes fan for most of his life. Les Klinger is considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on those twin icons of the Victorian era, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, and has won numerous awards for his work on these historic subjects.
Les Klinger and Laurie R. King co-edited In the Company of Sherlock Holmes: Stories Inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon (Pegasus Books, 2014), a collection of new stories by various authors. This book was the subject of the litigation known as Klinger v. Conan Doyle Estate, Limited, in which Klinger was victorious in the 7th Circuit U. S. Court of Appeals in “freeing” the characters of Holmes and Watson from copyright protection (and last November, the Supreme Court of the United States denied certiorari in the case, allowing the 7th Circuit’s ruling to stand). This month the book received two prestigious awards, the “Silver Falchion” award from the regional convention known as “Killer Nashville” and the Anthony award from BoucherCon, the long-running national event, both in the category of “Best Anthology” for 2014.
