Les Klinger and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Sherlock Holmes

Partner Les Klinger, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Sherlock Holmes, and long-time friend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar teamed up for a one-on-one public conversation discussing Kareem’s new book Mycroft Holmes. The well-attended event was held at Chevalier’s Bookstore, which, established in 1940, is one of the oldest bookstores in Los Angeles.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is recognized by Sports Illustrated and Time magazine as history’s greatest basketball player (he is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer) and has been an avid Sherlock Holmes fan for most of his life. Les Klinger is considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on those twin icons of the Victorian era, Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, and has won numerous awards for his work on these historic subjects.

Family in the News – City Treasurer

Karen S. Nowicki, CPA MBA, wife of Kopple & Klinger attorney Ryan Nowicki, was re-elected as the City Treasurer in Hermosa Beach at its general municipal election on November 5, 2013.  Karen ran without opposition, and shortly after the election received a congratulatory letter from L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe stating “It’s the ultimate compliment to run unopposed!”  While Karen agrees, she also states that running unopposed was a great relief!

Les Klinger Wins Prestigious Awards for Authorship

Les Klinger and Laurie R. King co-edited In the Company of Sherlock Holmes: Stories Inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon (Pegasus Books, 2014), a collection of new stories by various authors.  This book was the subject of the litigation known as Klinger v. Conan Doyle Estate, Limited, in which Klinger was victorious in the 7th Circuit U. S. Court of Appeals in “freeing” the characters of Holmes and Watson from copyright protection (and last November, the Supreme Court of the United States denied certiorari in the case, allowing the 7th Circuit’s ruling to stand).  This month the book received two prestigious awards, the “Silver Falchion” award from the regional convention known as “Killer Nashville” and the Anthony award from BoucherCon, the long-running national event, both in the category of “Best Anthology” for 2014.

David Elbaz Moves to New Home and Announces a New Baby Coming Soon

Partner David Elbaz, his wife Lauren and their 2 year old son Mason settled into their new home in family friendly Playa Vista. While David is at the office, Mason can be found cruising the tot lot, breaking rules at the kiddie pool, and shopping at the new Whole Foods. David and Lauren are also proudly expecting to fill the extra bedroom with a new addition to the family in early 2016.

Jessica Sibony Joins Kopple & Klinger

On August 24, 2015, Jessica Sibony joined Kopple & Klinger as an experienced associate.  Jessica brings with her a depth of knowledge and expertise in estate planning, trust administration and general business transactions.  Jessica’s past experience also includes trust and estate litigation, including the representation of individuals and fiduciaries in will and trust contests, breach of fiduciary duty cases, accounting actions, and financial elder abuse.  Jessica received her J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 2012.  Additionally, she graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.A. in Political Science in 2009.  She is admitted to practice in California and is a member of the Trust and Estates Section of the California State Bar.

Ryan Nowicki Appointed to Local Police Board

On August 19, 2015, Kopple & Klinger attorney Ryan Nowicki was appointed to the Hermosa Beach Community Police Advisory Board, which serves as a liaison between the Hermosa Beach Police Department and the local community at large. Shortly after being appointed by Police Chief Sharon Papa, Ryan was elected by the Board as its Co-Chairperson. Ryan has assisted law enforcement departments in many capacities for a number of years, including representing on a pro bono basis the largest fundraising foundation for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Partner Les Klinger Named as a 2015 Super Lawyer

Partner Les Klinger has been selected to the 2015 Super Lawyers list. Each year, no more than five percent of the lawyers in the state are selected to receive this honor. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual selection process includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates and peer reviews by practice area.

Ryan Nowicki Re-Elected to the Board of Local Leadership Organization

Ryan Nowicki was recently re-elected to the Board of Directors of Leadership Hermosa Beach. This will be Ryan’s 5th two-year term of office with the nonprofit organization, which runs an annual adult leadership program for local residents and business owners. In his tenure on the Board at Leadership Hermosa Beach, Ryan has at different times served as its President, Treasurer, Program Director, and Director of Recruiting, in addition to providing pro bono legal advice as its General Counsel. The goal of Leadership Hermosa Beach is to educate and train local leaders while making a positive impact on the community, and many of its alumni serve in the highest elected and appointed positions in local city government and local civic organizations.

Partner Les Klinger’s Speaking Engagements and New Books

Partner Les Klinger just returned from being a Special Guest of Honor at NecronomiCon in Providence, RI, a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the birth of H. P. Lovecraft.

He will be speaking in September to the entire campus of Eastfield College, Mesquite, TX, on mystery fiction, and he has been invited to be the sole American author participating in “Black Week,” a special event to be held in Istanbul commemorating the 125th anniversary of the birth of Agatha Christie.

Les will also be a Guest of Honor at StokerCon, the first annual convention of the Horror Writers Association, in May 2016 in Las Vegas.

Les also has two new books out this Fall, In the Shadow of Edgar Allan Poe: Classic Horror Fiction, 1816-1914 (Pegasus Books) and Annotated Sandman, vol. 4 (Vertigo/DC Entertainment).
