From October 31, 2013 through November 3, 2013, Care Harbor conducted the nation’s largest urban free medical clinic, held in downtown Los Angeles. For four days, Care Harbor, a Los Angeles based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, converted the entire Los Angeles Sports Arena (former home of the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team) into a temporary hospital and provided over 3,000 patients with much needed medical, dental and vision care, all 100% for free. Staffed by thousands of volunteers each year, Care Harbor serves the uninsured and underinsured populations in each town in which it takes up temporary residence.
Care Harbor has been a pro bono client of Kopple & Klinger attorney Ryan Nowicki since its inception in 2010, and Ryan continues to serve on its Board of Directors and as its outside legal counsel to this day.
On June 7, 2013, Kopple and Klinger joined in with a number of local professional firms to co-sponsor the L.A. County Bar Association’s “Dana Latham Memorial Award.” In 1976, the Los Angeles County Bar Taxation Section decided to honor the memory of Dana Latham by establishing the Dana Latham Memorial Award.
The award is given only in those years when the Executive Committee of the Taxation Section concludes that there is a then-living leader of the Los Angeles tax bar who has made an outstanding contribution to the community and to the legal profession in the field of taxation. Generally, such service involves a broad participation in community and public service coupled with achievement as a leader on the Bench, in legal education, tax literature, or in practice as a lawyer, and may involve a combination of these factors.
Dana Latham epitomized those characteristics. He served as President of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Commissioner of Internal Revenue, and made many other significant contributions during his lifetime.
On June 3, 2013, Kopple & Klinger Partner David Elbaz was elected to the Board of Directors of the Beverly Hills Estate Planning Council (BHEPC).
